Johnny Cleveland: Browns halt Manziel’s fall

May 9, 2014

The Cleveland Browns have had two decades of disappointment at QB. If there’s a team in need of hope, it’s this one.

They hope that Johnny Football can shut the door on the Factory of Sadness.

What a gutsy move by Ray Farmer, who has put Kevin Costner to shame with his maneuvering up and down the draft. He landed Johnny Manziel with the 22nd pick in the draft after passing him twice earlier in the night. How could they have imagined this unfolding this way?

Manziel’s slide was the early story of the draft. The Jaguars took Blake Bortles at No. 3. Browns said no twice. The Rams went two other directions. Heck, even Jerry Jones passed! And when the Philadelphia Eagles and Chip Kelly (who recruited Manziel at Oregon) traded out and the Browns slid up from 26, giving up a third-round pick, you knew it was on.

If there’s an offensive coordinator who could be perfect for Manziel, it’s Kyle Shanahan. If there are two weapons who can help bail out Manziel when his passes aren’t directly on target, it’s Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron.

Not everyone loves him. But Manziel is a fascinating pick, no question.

The Browns are a story again. Is it a good one? We won’t know for years perhaps. But Farmer, a little over two months on the job, was unafraid to gamble on greatness when the price was right.

Browns fans, can you get behind this bold stroke?
