Auto Insurance Westchester NYGetting a driver’s license is a major milestone in a teenager’s life. While driving a car cause for celebration, it is also a huge responsibility that should not be taken lightly. As a parent, you understand that; the trick is often to get teenagers to understand that as well. That is why when you are shopping for auto insurance in Westchester NY, you should look for a company that will work with you and help you encourage your teenager to drive responsibly. It will be in everyone’s best interest.

This doesn’t mean that you need to install a tracking device on your car to monitor your child’s every move. “Helicopter parenting” as the authors of Parenting with Love and Logic deemed such behavior is not necessary. Instead, select insurance companies offer new driver contracts that outline what is expected of teenagers and the consequences if they break the contract. Some of the things covered include:

  • Keeping the car clean
  • Paying for gas
  • Zero tolerance for driving under the influence
  • Not using cell phone for texts or calls while driving
  • Wearing a seat belt at all times

The consequences outlined in the contract aren’t all negative. Many policies for auto insurance in Westchester NY also offer policy discounts and other incentives in the contract for safe driving over a certain period of time as well as maintaining a certain grade point average.

By setting limits for driving and establishing consequences for both good and bad behavior, your teenager will be more likely to practice good driving habits. You are also teaching them valuable life skills and helping them make their own decision.
