Sensitivity Training Is Essential for Nursing Home Staff

Seniors living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities have unique emotional and physical needs. Staff of a younger generation may not understand that their actions and mannerisms can seem abrupt or uncaring to the elderly in their care. As a result, sensitivity training has become commonplace in these environments.

What Is Sensitivity Training?

Nursing home patient sensitivity training doesn’t take the place of other procedures. It’s designed to add supplemental instruction to help staff become more attuned to residents’ needs when moving them and speaking with them.

Two techniques listed below are especially effective.

  1. Simulation – Workers better understand their patients’ needs, and consequently provide better treatment, if they appreciate the limitations faced by the elderly. Drills are developed to simulate specific issues, including:
    • Fatigue – Workers breath through a straw.
    • Stiff and painful joints – Employees wear bulky gloves while performing basic functions.
    • Poor eyesight and hearing – Staff wears earplugs and specially-designed glasses.
  2. Behavior – Complaints of harassment are fairly common in nursing homes if workers don’t conduct themselves in an acceptable manner. Specific behavioral training should be geared toward exhibiting patience with those who move slowly. Teaching good communication skills while speaking with patients who have poor health or dementia is also critical.

As your staff becomes more in tune with their elderly patients’ needs, everyone involved will be much happier.
